| 1And now it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth [month], on the tenth of the month, that certain men of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord and sat before me. |

אוַיְהִ֣י | בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗ית בַּֽחֲמִשִּׁי֙ בֶּעָשׂ֣וֹר לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ בָּ֧אוּ אֲנָשִׁ֛ים מִזִּקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִדְרֹ֣שׁ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ לְפָנָֽי: |
| to inquire of the Lord: concerning their needs, and if He does not listen to us, neither will we be punished for the sins in our hands, for He has already sold us, and He has nothing on us. If a master has sold his slave, or a husband has divorced his wife, does one have anything on the other? And from the conclusion of the matter you learn [this], from the reply that he gave them (verse 32): “What enters your thoughts, etc.” |

לדרוש את ה':
על צרכיהם ואם אינו שומע לנו גם אנו לא נענש על עבירות שבידנו שהרי כבר מכרנו ואין לו עלינו כלום עבד שמכרו רבו ואשה שגרשה בעלה כלום יש לזה על זה כלום ומסוף הענין אתה למד מתשובה שהשיבם והעולה על רוחכם וגו' (לקמן ל"ב):

| 2Then came the word of the Lord to me, saying: |
|
בוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 3"Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them: So says the Lord God, Have you come to inquire of Me? As true as I live, I will not be inquired of by you! says the Lord God. |
|
גבֶּן־אָדָ֗ם דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶת־זִקְנֵ֚י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כֹּ֚ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה הֲלִדְרֹ֥שׁ אֹתִ֖י אַתֶּ֣ם בָּאִ֑ים חַי־אָ֙נִי֙ אִם־אִדָּרֵ֣שׁ לָכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה: |
| I will not be inquired of by you!: in your request. Yet at the end of this Book (36:37): He says: “I will… be inquired of by the house of Israel.” This is one of the places that teach us that the Holy One, blessed be He, recants on evil. And regarding matters similar to this, it is said (Num. 23:19): “He says but He does not do.” Midrash of Rabbi Tanchuma (Vayera 13). |

בבקשתכם ובסוף הספר הזה הוא אמר אדרש לבית ישראל זו אחת מן המקומות המלמדים אותנו שהקב"ה חוזר בו על הרעה ועל כיוצא בזה ההוא אמר ולא יעשה (במדבר כ״ג:י״ט) מדרש תנחומא:

| 4Will you contend with them? Will you contend, O son of man? Let them know the abominations of their fathers. |

| 5And you shall say to them: So says the Lord God, On the day I chose Israel, then I lifted up My hand to the seed of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up My hand to them, saying: I am the Lord your God. |

הוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כֹּֽה־אָמַר֘ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִה֒ בְּיוֹם֙ בָּֽחֳרִ֣י בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וָֽאֶשָּׂ֣א יָדִ֗י לְזֶ֙רַע֙ בֵּ֣ית יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וָֽאִוָּדַ֥ע לָהֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וָֽאֶשָּׂ֨א יָדִ֚י לָהֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֲנִ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם: |
| On the day I chose Israel: This hatred was pent up before the Omnipresent close to nine hundred years from [the days] that they were in Egypt until [those of] Ezekiel, but His love had shielded them. Now that they had increased their transgressions, though, it was awakened, and concerning this it is stated (Prov. 10:12): “Hatred arouses quarrels [but love covers up all transgressions].” |

ביום בחרי בישראל:
הרי שהיתה שנאה זו כבושה לפני המקום קרוב לתשע מאות שנה משהיו במצרי' עד יחזקאל והיתה אהבתו מחפ' עליהם ועל ידי שהיו עתה מרבים לפשוע נתעוררה ועל זה נאמר שנאה תעורר מדנים וגו' (משלי י׳:י״ב):

| 6On that day I lifted up My hand to them to bring them out of the land of Egypt, to a land that I had sought out for them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all the lands. |
|
ובַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא נָשָׂ֚אתִי יָדִי֙ לָהֶ֔ם לְהֽוֹצִיאָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֶל־אֶ֜רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־תַּ֣רְתִּי לָהֶ֗ם זָבַ֚ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ צְבִ֥י הִ֖יא לְכָל־הָֽאֲרָצֽוֹת: |
| 7And I said to them: Every man cast away the despicable idols from before his eyes, and pollute not yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God. |

זוָֽאֹמַ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם אִ֣ישׁ שִׁקּוּצֵ֚י עֵינָיו֙ הַשְׁלִ֔יכוּ וּבְגִלּוּלֵ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם אַל־תִּטַּמָּ֑אוּ אֲנִ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם: |
| And I said to them: Aaron proclaimed this prophecy to them before the Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself to Moses in the thorn bush. This is what was said to Eli (I Sam. 2:27): “Did I appear to the house of your father when they were in Egypt, etc.?” |
|
ואומר אליהם:
אהרן ניבא להם נבואה זו קודם שנגלה הקב"ה על משה בסנה וזהו שנאמר (שמואל א ב׳:כ״ז) לעלי הנגלה נגלתי אל בית אביך בהיותם במצרים וגו':

| 8But they rebelled against Me and would not consent to hearken to Me; they did not cast away, every man, the despicable idols from before their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt; and I said to pour out My wrath over them, to give My anger full rein over them, in the midst of the land of Egypt. |
|
חוַיַּמְרוּ־בִ֗י וְלֹ֚א אָבוּ֙ לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ אֵלַ֔י אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־שִׁקּוּצֵ֚י עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ לֹ֣א הִשְׁלִ֔יכוּ וְאֶת־גִּלּוּלֵ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם לֹ֣א עָזָ֑בוּ וָֽאֹמַ֞ר לִשְׁפֹּ֧ךְ חֲמָתִ֣י עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם לְכַלּ֚וֹת אַפִּי֙ בָּהֶ֔ם בְּת֖וֹךְ אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם: |
| But they rebelled against Me: They are the wicked, the majority of Israel, who died in the three days of darkness, as it is said (Exod. 13:18): “and the children of Israel went out of Egypt, (חֲמֻשִּׁים)” one out of fifty, and some say, one out of five hundred. |
|
וימרו בי:
הם הרשעים רובם של ישראל שמתו בשלשת ימי אפלה כמו שנאמר וחמושים עלו בני ישראל וגו' (שמות יד) אחד מחמשים ויש אומרים אחד מחמש מאות:

| 9But I wrought for the sake of My Name so that it should not be desecrated before the eyes of the nations in whose midst they were, before whose eyes I made Myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt. |
|
טוָאַ֙עַשׂ֙ לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמִ֔י לְבִלְתִּ֥י הֵחֵ֛ל לְעֵינֵ֥י הַגּוֹיִ֖ם אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֣מָּה בְתוֹכָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר נוֹדַ֚עְתִּי אֲלֵיהֶם֙ לְעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם לְהֽוֹצִיאָ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם: |
| that it should not be desecrated: That My Name should not be desecrated; since I became known to them and I promised to take them out, and the Egyptians recognized that they are My people, if I were to destroy them their enemies would say, “Because He has not the ability to take them out.” |

לבלתי החל:
שלא יתחלל שמי מאחר שנודעתי להם והבטחתים להוציאם והכירו מצרים שהם עמי אילו הייתי משחיתם היו אומרים אויביהם מבלתי יכולת בידו להוציאם:

| 10And I brought them out of the land of Egypt, and I brought them into the wilderness. |
|
יוָֽאוֹצִיאֵ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וָֽאֲבִאֵ֖ם אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּֽר: |
| 11And I gave them My statutes, and My ordinances I made known to them, which, if a man perform, he shall live through them. |
|
יאוָֽאֶתֵּ֚ן לָהֶם֙ אֶת־חֻקּוֹתַ֔י וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֖י הוֹדַ֣עְתִּי אוֹתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה אוֹתָ֛ם הָֽאָדָ֖ם וָחַ֥י בָּהֶֽם: |
| 12Moreover, I gave them My Sabbaths to be for a sign between Me and them, to know that I, the Lord, make them holy. |
|
יבוְגַ֚ם אֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתַי֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָהֶ֔ם לִהְי֣וֹת לְא֔וֹת בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם לָדַ֕עַת כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה מְקַדְּשָֽׁם: |
| to be for a sign: It is a great sign for them, that I gave the day of My resting to them for a resting. Behold this is a phenomenal manifestation that I hallowed them to Myself. |
|
להיות לאות:
אות גדול הוא להם שנתתי את יום מנוחתי להם למנוחה הרי היכר גדול שקדשתים לי:

| 13But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they walked not in My statutes, and they despised My ordinances, which, if a man keep, he will live through them, and My Sabbaths they desecrated exceedingly. Then I said to pour out My wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make an end to them. |
|
יגוַיַּמְרוּ־בִ֨י בֵֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֨י לֹא־הָלָ֜כוּ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֣י מָאָ֗סוּ אֲשֶׁר֩ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה אֹתָ֚ם הָֽאָדָם֙ וָחַ֣י בָּהֶ֔ם וְאֶת־שַׁבְּתֹתַ֖י חִלְּל֣וּ מְאֹ֑ד וָֽאֹמַ֞ר לִשְׁפֹּ֨ךְ חֲמָתִ֧י עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר לְכַלּוֹתָֽם: |
| they walked not in My statutes: They tested Me with the calf, and in Rephidim [i.e., showing unwillingness] to receive the Torah, and they left over some of the manna. |
|
בחוקותי לא הלכו:
נסו אותי בעגל וברפידים מלקבל את התורה והותירו מן המן:
|
| and My Sabbaths they desecrated: Some of the people went out to gather manna. |

ואת שבתותי חללו:
יצאו מן העם ללקוט מן:
|
| 14And I wrought for the sake of My Name, so it should not be desecrated before the eyes of the nations before whose eyes I had brought them out. |
|
ידוָאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמִ֑י לְבִלְתִּ֚י הֵחֵל֙ לְעֵינֵ֣י הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֽוֹצֵאתִ֖ים לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם: |
| 15But I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all lands. |
|
טווְגַם־אֲנִ֗י נָשָׂ֧אתִי יָדִ֛י לָהֶ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לְבִלְתִּי֩ הָבִ֨יא אוֹתָ֜ם אֶל־הָאָ֣רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֗תִּי זָבַ֚ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ צְבִ֥י הִ֖יא לְכָל־הָֽאֲרָצֽוֹת: |
| 16Because they despised My ordinances, and in My statutes they did not walk, and My Sabbaths they desecrated- for their heart went constantly after their idols. |
|
טזיַ֜עַן בְּמִשְׁפָּטַ֣י מָאָ֗סוּ וְאֶת־חֻקּוֹתַי֙ לֹא־הָֽלְכ֣וּ בָהֶ֔ם וְאֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י חִלֵּ֑לוּ כִּ֛י אַֽחֲרֵ֥י גִלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֖ם לִבָּ֥ם הֹלֵֽךְ: |
| 17Nevertheless, My eye looked pityingly upon them, not to destroy them, and I did not make an end to them in the wilderness. |
|
יזוַתָּ֧חָס עֵינִ֛י עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מִשַּֽׁחֲתָ֑ם וְלֹֽא־עָשִׂ֧יתִי אוֹתָ֛ם כָּלָ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּֽר: |
| 18But I said to their children in the wilderness: 'In the statutes of your fathers do not walk and do not observe their ordinances, and do not defile yourselves with their idols. |
|
יחוָֽאֹמַ֚ר אֶל־בְּנֵיהֶם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר בְּחוּקֵּ֚י אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ אַל־תֵּלֵ֔כוּ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפְּטֵיהֶ֖ם אַל־תִּשְׁמֹ֑רוּ וּבְגִלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֖ם אַל־תִּטַּמָּֽאוּ: |
| 19I am the Lord your God: walk in My statutes, and keep My ordinances and fulfill them. |
|
יטאֲנִי֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֖י לֵ֑כוּ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֥י שִׁמְר֖וּ וַֽעֲשׂ֥וּ אוֹתָֽם: |
| 20And keep My Sabbaths holy so that they be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.' |
|
כוְאֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י קַדֵּ֑שׁוּ וְהָי֚וּ לְאוֹת֙ בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם לָדַ֕עַת כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם: |
| 21But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, and they did not observe My ordinances to perform them, which if a man perform, he shall live through them; My Sabbaths they desecrated, and I said to pour out My wrath upon them, to spend My anger upon them in the wilderness. |
|
כאוַיַּמְרוּ־בִ֣י הַבָּנִ֗ים בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֣י לֹֽא־הָ֠לָכוּ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֨י לֹא־שָֽׁמְר֜וּ לַֽעֲשׂ֣וֹת אוֹתָ֗ם אֲשֶׁר֩ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה אוֹתָ֚ם הָֽאָדָם֙ וָחַ֣י בָּהֶ֔ם אֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י חִלֵּ֑לוּ וָֽאֹמַ֞ר לִשְׁפֹּ֧ךְ חֲמָתִ֣י עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם לְכַלּ֥וֹת אֲפִּ֛י בָּ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּֽר: |
| But the children rebelled against Me: The tribe of Dan, and likewise those who became attached to Baal Peor after the generation of the wilderness had died out. |
|
וימרו בי הבנים:
שבטו של דן וכן הנצמדים לבעל פעור (מדבר כה) לאחר שמתו דור המדבר:
|
| 22I drew back My hand and acted for the sake of My Name, that it should not be desecrated before the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I took them out. |
|
כבוַֽהֲשִׁבֹ֙תִי֙ אֶת־יָדִ֔י וָאַ֖עַשׂ לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמִ֑י לְבִלְתִּ֚י הֵחֵל֙ לְעֵינֵ֣י הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אוֹתָ֖ם לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם: |
| 23I also lifted My hand to them in the wilderness to scatter them among the nations and disperse them in the lands. |
|
כגגַּם־אֲנִ֗י נָשָׂ֧אתִי אֶת־יָדִ֛י לָהֶ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לְהָפִ֚יץ אֹתָם֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וּלְזָר֥וֹת אוֹתָ֖ם בָּֽאֲרָצֽוֹת: |
| to scatter them: Back then, I promised them to scatter them (Deut. 4:25ff.): “When you will beget children and children’s children, etc. [the Lord will scatter you among the nations, etc.].” |
|
להפיץ אותם:
מאז הבטחתים להפיצם כי תוליד בנים ובני בנים וגו' (דברים ד׳:כ״ה):

| 24Because they did not perform My ordinances, and they rejected My statutes and desecrated My Sabbaths, and their eyes were after the idols of their fathers. |
|
כדיַ֜עַן מִשְׁפָּטַ֚י לֹֽא־עָשׂוּ֙ וְחֻקּוֹתַ֣י מָאָ֔סוּ וְאֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י חִלֵּ֑לוּ וְאַֽחֲרֵי֙ גִּלּוּלֵ֣י אֲבוֹתָ֔ם הָי֖וּ עֵֽינֵיהֶֽם: |
| 25I, too, gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances through which they should not live. |
|
כהוְגַם־אֲנִי֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָהֶ֔ם חֻקִּ֖ים לֹ֣א טוֹבִ֑ים וּמִ֨שְׁפָּטִ֔ים לֹ֥א יִֽחְי֖וּ בָּהֶֽם: |
| statutes that were not good: I delivered them into the hands of their temptation to stumble over their iniquity, and so did Jonathan render: And I delivered them into the hands of their foolish temptation, and they went and made decrees that were not good, and practices by which they cannot live. |
|
נתתי להם חוקים לא טובים:
מסרתם ביד יצרם להכשל בעוונם וכן ת"י ומסרתינון ביד יצרהון טפשא ואזלו ועבדו גזירן דלא תקנן ונמוסין דלא יתקיימו בהון:

| 26And I defiled them with their gifts, when causing to pass all who open the womb, in order that I lay them desolate, in order that they know that I am the Lord. |
|
כווָֽאֲטַמֵּ֚א אוֹתָם֙ בְּמַתְּנוֹתָ֔ם בְּהַֽעֲבִ֖יר כָּל־פֶּ֣טֶר רָ֑חַם לְמַ֣עַן אֲשִׁמֵּ֔ם לְמַ֙עַן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵֽדְע֔וּ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| And I defiled them with their gifts: Those gifts that I legislated for them to hallow for Me every firstborn, I delivered them into the hands of their temptation: to pass those firstborn to the Molech. Hence the statutes that are not good. |
|
ואטמא אותם במתנותם:
אותם מתנות שחקקתי להם לקדש לי כל בכור מסרתים ביד יצרם להעבירם לאותם בכורות למולך הרי חוקים לא טובים:
|
| in order that I lay them desolate: Heb. אֲשְּׁמֵם. I shall lay them desolate and destroy them. אֲשְּׁמֵם, is an expression of שְּׁמָמָה, desolation. Whoever explains it as an expression of אַשְּׁמָה, guilt, errs, because the ‘aleph’ is not part of the radical. |

למען אשמם:
אשימם ואחריב אותם, אשמם לשון שממה והמפרשו לשון אשמה טועה הוא שהאל"ף אינה משרשי התיבה:

| that they know: when I will bring upon them the evil. |
|
אשר ידעו:
כשאביא עליהם הרעה:
|
| 27Therefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and say to them: So said the Lord God, [With] this too, your fathers blasphemed Me when they dealt treacherously with Me. |
|
כזלָכֵ֞ן דַּבֵּ֨ר אֶל־בֵּ֚ית יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בֶּן־אָדָ֔ם וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה ע֗וֹד זֹ֚את גִּדְּפ֚וּ אוֹתִי֙ אֲב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם בְּמַֽעֲלָ֥ם בִּ֖י מָֽעַל: |
| this too: they continued to do when I brought them into the land. |

עוד זאת:
הוסיפו לעשות כשהביאותים אל הארץ:
|
| 28And I brought them to the land, that which I lifted My hand to give to them, and they saw every high hill and every many-branched tree, and they slaughtered there their sacrifices, and they presented the provocation of their offering, and there they placed their pleasing savors, and there they poured their libations. |
|
כחוָֽאֲבִיאֵם֙ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֚ר נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־יָדִ֔י לָתֵ֥ת אוֹתָ֖הּ לָהֶ֑ם וַיִּרְאוּ֩ כָל־גִּבְעָ֨ה רָמָ֜ה וְכָל־עֵ֣ץ עָב֗וֹת וַיִּזְבְּחוּ־שָׁ֚ם אֶת־זִבְחֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּתְּנוּ־שָׁם֙ כַּ֣עַס קָרְבָּנָ֔ם וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ שָׁ֗ם רֵיחַ נִיח֣וֹחֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּסִּ֥יכוּ שָׁ֖ם אֶת־נִסְכֵּיהֶֽם: |
| 29And I said to them: 'What is this high place that you are the ones coming there?' So its name was called Bamah until this day. |
|
כטוָֽאֹמַ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם מָ֣ה הַבָּמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־אַתֶּ֥ם הַבָּאִ֖ים שָׁ֑ם וַיִּקָּרֵ֚א שְׁמָהּ֙ בָּמָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה: |
| So its name was called Bamah: A pejorative: i.e., of what (בַּמֶה) importance is it? |

ויקרא שמה במה:
לשון גנאי כלומר במה היא נחשבת:

| 30Therefore, say to the house of Israel: So said the Lord God: Are you defiling yourselves in the way of your forefathers, and are you going astray after their abominations? |

ללָכֵ֞ן אֱמֹ֣ר | אֶל־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כֹּ֚ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה הַבְּדֶ֥רֶךְ אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם אַתֶּ֣ם נִטְמְאִ֑ים וְאַֽחֲרֵ֥י שִׁקּֽוּצֵיהֶ֖ם אַתֶּ֥ם זֹנִֽים: |
| in the way of your forefathers, etc.: [This is] a rhetorical question. Is this proper, that you should have defiled yourselves in the way of your forefathers, and I should be inquired of by you to reply to your question? |
|
הבדרך אבותיכם וגו':
לשון תימה וכי כך הגון שבדרך אבותיכם אתם נטמאים ואני אדרש לכם להשיב על שאלתכם:

| 31And when you take your gifts, when you cause your children to pass through the fire, you defile yourselves to all your idols until this day, shall I then be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, says the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you. |
|
לאוּבִשְׂאֵ֣ת מַתְּנֹֽתֵיכֶ֡ם בְּהַֽעֲבִיר֩ בְּנֵיכֶ֨ם בָּאֵ֜שׁ אַתֶּם֩ נִטְמְאִ֚ים לְכָל־גִּלּֽוּלֵיכֶם֙ עַד־הַיּ֔וֹם וַֽאֲנִ֛י אִדָּרֵ֥שׁ לָכֶ֖ם בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל חַי־אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה אִם־אִדָּרֵ֖שׁ לָכֶֽם: |
| And when you take your gifts: And with the taking of your gifts that you should have given Me, and you take them from Me to cause your firstborn to pass to idols. |
|
ובשאת מתנותיכם:
ובלקיחת מתנותיכם שהיה לכם לתת לי ואתם לוקחים אותם ממני להעביר בכורותיכם לעבודת כוכבים:

| 32But what enters your mind shall not come about, what you say, 'Let us be like the nations, like the families of the lands, to serve wood and stone.' |
|
לבוְהָֽעֹלָה֙ עַל־ר֣וּחֲכֶ֔ם הָי֖וֹ לֹ֣א תִֽהְיֶ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר | אַתֶּ֣ם אֹֽמְרִ֗ים נִֽהְיֶ֚ה כַגּוֹיִם֙ כְּמִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת לְשָׁרֵ֖ת עֵ֥ץ וָאָֽבֶן: |
| But what enters your mind: Heb. רוחכם והעלה על- [lit. what ascends upon your spirit], what ascends upon your mind. |
|
והעולה על רוחכם:
שעולה על דעתכם:
|
| ‘Let us be like the nations’: Let us break off His yoke from our necks since He sent us away from Him. |
|
נהיה כגוים:
נפרוק עולו מעל צוארנו מאחר ששלח מעליו:
|
| shall not come about: For you already accepted upon yourselves of your own free will in the days of Joshua, as it is written (Josh. 24:1): “And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel,” and the entire episode. |
|
היו לא תהיה:
כי כבר קבלתם עליכם מדעתכם בימי יהושע כמו שנאמר (יהושע כ״ד:א׳) ויאסוף יהושע את כל שבטי ישראל וכל הענין:

| 33As I live, says the Lord God, surely with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with poured out fury, will I reign over you. |
|
לגחַי־אָ֕נִי נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה אִם־לֹ֠א בְּיָ֨ד חֲזָקָ֜ה וּבִזְר֧וֹעַ נְטוּיָ֛ה וּבְחֵמָ֥ה שְׁפוּכָ֖ה אֱֽמְל֥וֹךְ עֲלֵיכֶֽם: |
| 34And I shall take you out of the peoples, and I shall gather you from the lands in which you were scattered, with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with poured out fury. |
|
לדוְהֽוֹצֵאתִ֚י אֶתְכֶם֙ מִן־הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים וְקִבַּצְתִּ֣י אֶתְכֶ֔ם מִן־הָֽ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר נְפֽוֹצוֹתֶ֖ם בָּ֑ם בְּיָ֚ד חֲזָקָה֙ וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ נְטוּיָ֔ה וּבְחֵמָ֖ה שְׁפוּכָֽה: |
| 35And I shall bring you to the wilderness of the peoples, and I shall contend with you there face to face. |
|
להוְהֵֽבֵאתִ֣י אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֶל־מִדְבַּ֖ר הָֽעַמִּ֑ים וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֚י אִתְּכֶם֙ שָׁ֔ם פָּנִ֖ים אֶל־פָּנִֽים: |
| the wilderness of the peoples: That is the wilderness through which they [the children of Israel] traveled for forty years, and so did Hosea prophesy (2:16): “and I will… lead her into the desert.” That is the desert of Sihon and Og. Ezekiel called it the wilderness of the peoples because many nations bordered upon it. |
|
מדבר העמים:
הוא המדבר שהלכו בו ארבעים שנה וכן ניבא (הושע ב) והולכתיה המדבר:

| 36As I contended with your forefathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I contend with you, says the Lord God. |
|
לוכַּֽאֲשֶׁ֚ר נִשְׁפַּ֙טְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֲב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם כֵּן אִשָּׁפֵ֣ט אִתְּכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה: |
| 37And I shall cause you to pass under the rod, and I shall bring you into the transmission of the covenant. |
|
לזוְהַֽעֲבַרְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑בֶט וְהֵֽבֵאתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּמָסֹ֥רֶת הַבְּרִֽית: |
| under the rod: That you shall be subordinate to Me and to My chastisement. |
|
תחת השבט:
שתהיו כפופי' לי ולמוסרי:
|
| into the transmission of the covenant: The covenant that I transmitted to you. |
|
במסורת הברית:
בברי' שמסרתי לכם:
|
| 38And I shall separate from you those who rebel and those who transgress against Me; from the land of their sojournings I shall take them, but to the land of Israel they shall not come, and you will know that I am the Lord. |
|
לחוּבָֽרוֹתִ֣י מִכֶּ֗ם הַמֹּֽרְדִ֚ים וְהַפּֽוֹשְׁעִים֙ בִּ֔י מֵאֶ֚רֶץ מְגֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ אוֹצִ֣יא אוֹתָ֔ם וְאֶל־אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֣א יָב֑וֹא וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| And I shall separate: Heb. וּבָרוֹתִי, an expression of ברד [selecting, separating]. |

| from the land of their sojournings: From the land of their exile I shall take them and slay them in the wilderness. |
|
מארץ מגוריהם:
מארץ גלותם אוציא אותם ואמיתם במדבר:

| 39And you, the house of Israel, so said the Lord God: Each man, go worship his idols since you do not hearken to Me, and no longer desecrate My holy Name with your gifts and with your idols. |
|
לטוְאַתֶּ֨ם בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר | אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה אִ֚ישׁ גִּלּוּלָיו֙ לְכ֣וּ עֲבֹ֔דוּ וְאַחַ֕ר אִם־אֵֽינְכֶ֖ם שֹֽׁמְעִ֣ים אֵלָ֑י וְאֶת־שֵׁ֚ם קָדְשִׁי֙ לֹ֣א תְחַלְּלוּ־ע֔וֹד בְּמַתְּנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם וּבְגִלּֽוּלֵיכֶֽם: |
| go worship: and do not show the nations that you are called by My Name by coming to the prophet to inquire of him [about the] Torah, and, after he tells you My words, not hearkening to Me, as the matter that is stated (33:32): “And behold you are to them like the song of the flutes, etc.” They hear your words, but they do not carry them out. |
|
לכו עבודו:
ואל תראו לאומות שאתם נקראים על שמי בבואכם אל הנביא לשאול לו תורה ומאחר שהוא אומר לכם דברי אינכם שומעים אלי כענין שנאמר (לקמן לג) והנך להם כשיר עגבים וגו' שומעים את דבריך ואינם עושים אותם:

| with your gifts and with your idols: For you separate the first born to be designated as a firstborn as I commanded you, but once My Name is called upon the thing, you sacrifice them to idols. |
|
במתנותיכם ובגלוליכם:
שאתם מפרישים הבכורות בשם בכורה כאשר צויתי אתכם ומשנקרא שמי על הדבר אתם מקריבים אותם לעבודת כוכבים:
|
| 40But on My holy mount, on the mountain of the height of Israel, says the Lord God. There all the house of Israel-yea, all of them-will serve Me in the land; there I will accept them, and there I will require your heave offerings and the first of your food with all your hallowed things. |
|
מכִּ֣י בְהַר־קָדְשִׁ֞י בְּהַ֣ר | מְר֣וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה שָׁ֣ם יַֽעַבְדֻ֜נִי כָּל־בֵּ֧ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל כֻּלֹּ֖ה בָּאָ֑רֶץ שָׁ֣ם אֶרְצֵ֔ם וְשָׁ֞ם אֶדְר֣וֹשׁ אֶת־תְּרוּמֹֽתֵיכֶ֗ם וְאֶת־רֵאשִׁ֛ית מַשְׂאֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם בְּכָל־קָדְשֵׁיכֶֽם: |
| and the first of your food: Heb. מַשְׂאוֹתֵיכֶם, like מִשְׁאַרוֹתֵיכֶם your kneading troughs, an expression of food, like (Exod. 21:10): “her food (שְּׁאֵרָה), her clothing, or her conjugal rights shall not be diminished.” Menachem also (p. 168) associated it in this manner. |
|
משאותיכם:
כמו משארותיכם לשון מזון כמו שארה כסותה ועונתה לא יגרע (שמות כא) וכן חברו מנחם:

| 41With a pleasing savor I shall accept you when I take you out of the nations, and I shall gather you from the lands in which you were scattered, and I shall be hallowed through you before the eyes of the nations. |
|
מאבְּרֵ֣יחַ נִיחֹחַ֘ אֶרְצֶ֣ה אֶתְכֶם֒ בְּהֽוֹצִיאִ֚י אֶתְכֶם֙ מִן־הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים וְקִבַּצְתִּ֣י אֶתְכֶ֔ם מִן־הָֽ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר נְפֹֽצֹתֶ֖ם בָּ֑ם וְנִקְדַּשְׁתִּ֥י בָכֶ֖ם לְעֵינֵ֥י הַגּוֹיִֽם: |
| 42And you will know that I am the Lord when I bring you to the land of Israel, to the land that I lifted My hand to give to your forefathers. |
|
מבוִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה בַּֽהֲבִיאִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל־אַדְמַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֚ר נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־יָדִ֔י לָתֵ֥ת אוֹתָ֖הּ לַֽאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם: |
| 43And there you will remember your ways and your deeds, with which you have been defiled, and you will quarrel with yourselves because of all your evils that you have done. |
|
מגוּזְכַרְתֶּם־שָׁ֗ם אֶת־דַּרְכֵיכֶם֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־עֲלִיל֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִטְמֵאתֶ֖ם בָּ֑ם וּנְקֹֽטֹתֶם֙ בִּפְנֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכָל־רָעוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲשִׂיתֶֽם: |
| and you will quarrel: Heb. וּנְקֹטֹתֶם, an expression of quarreling (קְטָטָה). Another explanation, following the Targum: וְתִּידַנְקוּן, and so does Jonathan render (9:4) הַנֶאֱנָחִים: “and those who groan,” demonir in Old French, to melt away. |

לשון קטטה לשון אחר כתרגומו ותידנקון וכן תרגם יונתן הנאנחים דמוני"ר בלע"ז:

| 44And you will know that I am the Lord when I do with you for My Name's sake, not according to your evil ways or according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel," says the Lord God. |

מדוִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה בַּֽעֲשׂוֹתִ֥י אִתְּכֶ֖ם לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמִ֑י לֹא֩ כְדַרְכֵיכֶ֨ם הָרָעִ֜ים וְכַֽעֲלִילֽוֹתֵיכֶ֚ם הַנִּשְׁחָתוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה: |
