It is a night of anticipation for the L-rd, to take them out of the land of Egypt; this night is the L-rd's, guarding all the children of Israel throughout their generations. (Exodus 12:42)
The anonymous figures in the painting are on a journey—the night sky above them is glowing, for the night itself is undergoing transformation as the darkness is slowly illuminated. In this painting, called "transition," there is fluidity in the figures, trees and sky, communicating a feeling of change, movement and newness. The journey from darkness to light has been the challenge of the Jewish people since that very first Exodus, when we were fused into the nation of Israel. Every year on Passover, a time when "the night shines like day," we retell the Exodus story and see ourselves on a journey to redemption.
